FACE IT…AFFIRMATIONS “ALONE” DON’T WORK

By Hu Dalconzo

I first learned about the power of affirmations and visualization techniques over 20 years ago. The affirmation process is based on the following concept: thoughts create feelings, feelings create actions, actions create habits, habits create beliefs, belief systems create human identities, and your human identities create your reality.

I embraced this concept and spent a great deal of time, effort, and money studying everything I could on this subject in an attempt to create the reality I wanted. The majority of the self-improvement courses, books, and tapes taught me various methods of how to visualize and affirm what I wanted to create.

I meditated and visualized hundreds of positive affirmations daily. I listened to hours upon hours of my own voice affirming what I wanted on an endless loop tape! I did mirror affirmations three times a day. I told myself that saying or thinking something negative was worse than saying a four-letter word. I really thought that affirmations SHOULD WORK, but they weren’t working for me. I felt disappointed because I did not understand why affirmations weren’t working for me. It became painfully evident that affirmations, alone, were disappointedly ineffective at creating the reality I wanted.

The affirmation, alone, concept assumes that you have had a life with functional role models, and that your past was devoid of physical, sexual, or verbal abuse. It assumes that your mind is a clean slate… free of past pain, loss, and dysfunctional experiences. According to this theory you can “PILEON” positive affirmations over a dysfunctional past and still create the reality you want. As I discovered, the “PILE IT ON” theory, alone, just doesn’t work!

In fact, the more affirmations you say that do not create the reality you want, the dirtier the slate of your mind becomes. The average person’s mind is cluttered with contradictory information. This inhibits the input of positive new affirmations because of the Law of the Universe that states: “Nothing changes until IT becomes what it is!” This means that you need to see the whole truth, as it is, without judgment, regret, or shame before affirmations will work for you! You will not create permanent positive change in your life until you learn how to clean the slate of your mind! Doing affirmations without cleaning your mind... is like putting on a clean white shirt before taking a shower!

“Tabula Rasa” is a Latin term that originated in ancient Greece and translates as “Clean Slate.” In the 4th century BC, Aristotle stated, “The mind is a clean tablet upon which experience writes.” Every negative experience of your life is inscribed on the slate of your mind. Unless the slate of your mind is periodically cleaned, it eventually becomes so layered with contradictory programming (negative & positive) that it triggers the Law of Physics that states: “No two things can occupy the same space at the same time!”

When two cars attempt to occupy the same parking space at the same time, you end up with a car accident. If you desire love, but your mind is filled with failed relationship experiences, these contradictory thoughts produce anxiety, fear, and confusion. These contradictory thoughts nullify the positive thoughts that you are affirming in an attempt to create a loving relationship.

If you want to create the reality you desire... first clean the slate of your mind. Psychologists have proven that you produce between 50,000 and 75,000 thoughts a day and that eighty percent of your thoughts are negative. Therefore, by age forty you have had 730,000,000 million thoughts. If eighty percent of your thoughts were negative, then the slate of your MIND is layered with 584,000,000 (a half billion) negative thoughts! That means even if you were to do 500 positive affirmations a day trying to reprogram your MIND to the positive, your mind would be sub-vocalizing 40,000 negative thoughts to the contrary. That is like trying to bail out a sinking boat with a thimble!

AFFIRMATIONS, ALONE, SIMPLY DON’T WORK! You must clean the slate of your mind and stop creating your old negative beliefs before your affirmations will create the reality you desire. If you do not learn how to dis-create your negative beliefs, you will only be thinking thoughts that are pre-maturely positive!

Until you can honestly and courageously view what really happened to you, with a non-judgmental attitude, you won’t be able to see the truth about your dharmic predicament. One of the main reasons people repress their childhood feelings is because they love and respect their parents, and at an unconscious level they see them as perfect. Remembering how you truly felt as a child, and learning how to feel and process your feelings using your adult powers, is the major healing intention of these Self-mastery Processes.

Once you learn how to surface and express your true feelings, you’ll free your Self from the past. You’ll no longer be carrying unfinished emotional business from the past into the present. Your past will no longer contaminate your present. This will free up huge amounts of your life force energy, which you can then use to empower your Self and others.

Facing the truth of your past allows you to heal and forgive yourself as well as others. Frozen emotions form deep resentments that keep you attached to your past hurts. Unless you release these negative emotions, they will cause you to recycle the same painful feelings and situations over and over again causing you to ask the question, “Why is this happening to me…AGAIN?”

I've just seen this but, well done Hu. As a psychotherapist, because of the experiences I have had myself and in working with others, I actually get quite distressed when I see people taking hard earned cash for motivational or inspirational work. It's like wallpapering a house which needs underpinning and new drains.
